How to mark your child for swim meets (pdf attached)

Swim Meet Arm/Leg Marking Guide

Write clearly and legibly on your child’s arm (or leg) as illustrated in the picture.

E—Event H—Heat L—Lane

Example of Arm Marking
It will look like this on swimmer’s arm

  • BA - Backstroke
  • FLY - Butterfly
  • FRR - Freestyle Relay (All swimmers in relay swim freestyle)
  • FR - Freestyle
  • BR - Breaststroke
  • IM - Individual Medley
  • MR - Medley Relay (Each swimmer swims a different stroke: 1st=back,

    2nd=breast, 3rd=fly, 4th=free)

    EXAMPLE:
    So in the example above, the swimmers first event is Event 8; she will be in Heat 2 and in Lane 6 - which is the Breaststroke in the Medley Relay. (For the Medley Relay, the order of the strokes is - (1) back, (2) breast, (3) fly, and (4) free. So the (2) means this swimmer is swimming breast stroke.) Her second event is Event 52; she is in Heat 2 and in Lane 4 and it’s the 100 Individual Medley. She will do all four strokes in this event—but in a specific order. The stroke order for the IM is butterfly, back, breast, free.

    Her third event is Event 62. She is in Heat 3 and in Lane 4 and it’s the 50 Breaststroke.

    Her last event is Event 82 - Freestyle Relay. She will be in Heat 2 and in

    Lane 5 AND she will be the 3rd swimmer in the relay. In the FFR, all swimmers do freestyle and the number in parenthesis indicates what order they will swim.

    Lastly, please write your child’s name on his/her back or left arm so the Clerk of Course can ensure they are in the correct heat and lane.
